He said it: We're in Iraq because of oil

President Bush admitted today that we are fighting the war in Iraq for oil.  You think I am kidding, right?  This was in his speech today (WhiteHouse.gov):

"If Zarqawi and bin Laden gain control of Iraq, theywould create a new training ground for future terrorist attacks; they'dseize oil fields to fund their ambitions; they could recruit moreterrorists by claiming an historic victory over the United States andour coalition."

And he waited until now to tell us this?  Because the arguments about weapons of mass destruction, Osama's Iraq connection and democracy in the Middle East didn't all pan out, the White House needed a new reason to give the American people as to why we are still fighting this long and costly war.  The newest reason is oil.  Has this been the motive all along?  Maybe years from now we will find that out.  One thing I do know is that Bush is running out of new reasons to spin at the same time as a majority of Americans are growing evermore impatient.

What really makes this statement from Bush so ludicrous and indicitive of desperation is the simple fact that his invasion of Iraq is the very thing that creates the condition he enumerates.

There was zero possibility that Iraqi oil could fall into ANYONES hands while Saddam was in power. Only Bush's actions have made it possible. It simply amazes me how stupid this gang of bunglers think we are!

That's a very good point that many conservatives don't want to acknowledge. It shows that the White House is constantly backtracking.

What bothered me the most was what he said last week regarding his pledge to keep fighting in Iraq in order to honor those that have fallen. It's like saying because other people died more people should be sent there to possibly die. It defies all logic.

That does not sound like the Christian mentality he likes to open brag about.

There is no Christian mentality in anything that Bush or any of his Evangelical Dominionists spout forth. They simply use the Bible to certify and sanctify their crusade to force everyone else to perform as they want them to.

Exactly. Catering to the right-wing is the only way for them to push their business conservative agenda. People always ask me about President Bush's leanings to the religious wing of the GOP. I always tell them that it's phony. As long as Karl Rove finds a way to court the religious community just in time for elections they will have succeeded. But deep down they are not religious conservatives. Why do you think they nominated John Roberts to the Supreme Court? The religious comunity is silently outraged, as I have been told. They were duped into thinking Bush was one of them. But deep down he only uses them to get votes. Bush is more of a Ken Lay than a Pat Robertson.
