Playing politics with flag burning without an enthusiastic opposition

Even though there was only one reported flag burning incident last year, Senate Republicans think flag burning is such an important issue that it is worth taxpayer time.  A constitutional amendment that would ban flag burning passed the House of Representatives by the required two-thirds super majority, and has reached the Senate floor for an upcoming vote.

If Democrats were not asleep at the wheel in terms of political strategy, they would note the rather obvious distinction between parties.  The Republicans seem to think that the three most important issues facing this country are gay marriage, the estate tax on the rich and flag burning.  Democrats, on the other hand, think the three most important problems are Iraq, the birth tax (otherwise known as the National Debt) and the cost of living.

But, of course, as long as the Democrats let them get away with it, the GOP will continue invoking their election year strategy without any hassle.
