Obama might announce Wednesday on Oprah
Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) on CBS' Sunday news show Face the Nation that he will make an announcement "fairly soon" regarding a potential presidential run. But what really caught the eye of many political analysts was an entry in the blog about there being an unusual open spot in Oprah's schedule this week. There are guests scheduled for today, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday -- but no one for Wednesday. It has long been speculated that Obama would make an announcement on her show, which would be smart in order to take some female votes away from Hillary Clinton:
A tipster with knowledge of Sen. Barack Obama's (D-IL) presidentialcampaign planning hints that an official announcement may be made onthe Chicago-based Oprah Winfrey Show this week.
The Oprah schedulefor Wednesday, January 17 says to "check back later" for more detailson the show. Since all shows are taped in advance, this suggestssomething is up.
(Here is so you can check if it has changed)
Within the last day, there is indication that this might be more than just a weak rumor. reports that Obama suddenly canceled his Martin Luther King Day speech, and has little planned this week:
Obama canceled tentative plans to deliver the keynote address forMartin Luther King Jr. Day ceremonies at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg,Va. University officials speculated that Obama's travel has beentemporarily suspended as he approaches the start of his presidentialcandidacy.
One year ago, many had hoped that Barack Obama would run for president in 2012 or 2016. Now, Obama probably understands that the Senate floor is where charisma and and originality die. If he were to run, now would be the best time for him.
If Barack does run (and I hope he does, as of now he' my choice) I can only anticipate the campaign smears that there will be. The pot smoking and cocaine use, they haven't really bashed him on that yet because Bush would have gotten his share of bashing. CNN did a piece on the way Barack dressed in some of his state visits, button collared shirt opened at the neck and a jacket, then they asked "who else dresses like this?...The Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (they didn't mention the other millions of people). But perhaps the main issue or disgrace may very well be the . And let's face it, EVERY Patriotic American KNOWS

Yeah, I think you are right about the comparison to the Iranian president. Certainly, as the Iraq occupation comes to a close, 2008 will mark a renewed effort to stop Iran from building nuclear weapons. Obama will be forced to say whether he wants diplomacy. If he favors diplomacy, conservatives will say, "Now only does he want to be friends with the Iranian president, but they obviously think alike because they dress the same way."

I hope he runs and actually starts saying something substantial during his campaign.
As far as the American medias attempts to draw comparisons between the way Candidates and 'enemies' dress, well thank God I live in Europe where most of our candidates are not as photogenic but relatively smart. I'm holding onto the belief that the American public voting won't prove that they are the most gullible in the western world by falling for such childish ruses.

I see your concern. In today's American political age, pop culture is mixed in with each campaign. If you have star power, you are more likely to win. Look at Arnold in California, Bloomberg in NYC and the list goes on. Obama is also a star. Thankfully, he is also smart.
