(Video) The political world just shook: Obama out-raised Hillary
Last night, as reported via , the Obama Campaign announced that it had raised $23.5 million in primary money. This topped Hillary Clinton, who raised a total of $26 million -- but only $20 million for the primaries. On the internet, Obama brought in a record $7 million. In total, Obama had 100,000 different , while Clinton only had 50,000. It shows who is less indebted to the big donors.
Last night on Scarborough, his round-table briefly discussed the significance of Obama out-raising the Clintons:
RYAN LIZZA: I think you can't exaggerate what a big deal this is on the Democratic side of the presidential race. I mean, look, this is the first family of Democratic politics, the Clintons, who have been raising money hand over fist for, you know, decades -- if you go back to Bill's Arkansas days. They have Terry McAuliffe, the greatest fundraiser in the Democratic Party, as the chairman of their campaign. And a guy that was in the state senate of Illinois just raised more money than them.
All facts aside, when a former state senator out-raises a former FirstLady, it says something about the power of small donors and their important role in 21st century political campaigning. When you have that manydonors, you aren't just building a campaign infrastructure -- you arebuilding a national political movement and making it mainstream.
For once, it looks like we will not have a presidential primary decided on which candidates are friends with whom. The contest will be about big ideas, optimism and a new beginning -- not question-less "chats" on your web site (and you know who I am talking about!).
