Corruption at the top of Iraq's police force

Yet another setback for the struggling Iraqi government:

A Sunni police chief praised by US forces for clearing his cityof insurgents has been arrested following an investigation intoalleged murder, corruption and crimes against the Iraqi people, theUS military says.

Col Hamid Ibrahim al-Jazaa, his brother and 14 bodyguards weretaken into custody Tuesday in the city of Hit, 140km west ofBaghdad, according to a statement by the public affairs office ofMultinational Corps-Iraq.

This comes almost exactly one month after Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki reinstated a Saddam-era law that barred internal Iraqi investigations into government corruption.

In other words, in Iraq today it is easier to investigate Sunnis officials than those of Shiite background.  This week, Shiite militiamen wearing police uniforms kidnapped five British soldiers.  There have been concerns about police corruption for the last few years.  But as of this moment, the Shiite police head in Baghdad is not under any investigation.

I think this issue will become increasingly worse. And if we adapt the part in the ISG Report where we would embed troops in the Iraqi army, imagine that crap? 1 soldier for every 100 Iraqi soldiers...sounds like a death sentence to me.
