Recommended Reading from The Blue State and Our Visitors.

We here at The Blue State have beentossing around the idea of as "Book club", "RecommendedReads"...etc. I don't think the books all have to have a politicalplot of theme. An example I could use would be a few books I think are worthy; 'Tuesday'swith Morrie', 'TheFive people You 'Meet in Heaven', "TheBook of Virtues", 'AngelesAshes', and a MonkSwimming' to name a few of the non-politics book I have read.. Naturallythere will be many political books. I mentioned books with great plots and"moral of the story" type.

If anyone has a book(s) you would like to share and feel are worthy, please leave in the comments section of the post. This is just a "feeler",and not  definitive as of yet.

Your thought's would be greatly  appreciative.

Thank you from The Blue State.

Joe Biden's MySpace friends revolt over war vote

Picphoto053107biden One week after Democrats such as Joe Biden supported the President's Iraq spending bill without a timetable, progressives are still livid.  All you have to do is visit the Senator Biden's MySpace page to get a glimpse of how angry people are.  Even his supporters are revolting.

Here is a sample:

"Based on your vote for the war spending, I think I'm officiallyundecided once again. Pathetic cowardly move! I'm sadened by the lackof conviction by the democratic party. Do the right thing and end thiswar now!" - Shad

"I bid you found farewell as a myspace friend and my potential candidate for president.Your consistency and candor attracted me to you but your vote tocontinue George Bush's war funding and your agreement to appear on theFox Noise Debate have excluded you from being a serious candidate forPresident." - Matt

"I'm angry at you..." - Tyler

Again, this is just a sample.  Not every message was negative.  But ever since his war vote, most messages have had a negative tone.

Now We Can assign "them" weapons and finally win this war!!

AmericablogtvliebermanseesprogressiAfter seeing Lieberman arrive in Iraq and donning his flakvest and Kevlar,I had to laugh and ask myself "didn't he pack a khaki shirt to enhance the illusion?I suppose you don't go to war with the body protection and clothing you want, you go with want you have.

Anyway, the  post 'Editorial:Lieberman, please leave our party' prompted the following dark humorpost.

I just know these guys can get the job done, we have the #1 cheerleader rooting for us!Cheerldr_bush

At this point I do not believe the politicians are voting with their heartsor using common sense to decide their votes. It is all about self/party gain. ANYONEthat says things are getting better is just plain old full O' crap. i.e."we had a great success today, a Humvee passed right by an IED (or it looked like a good place to hide one) and itdidn't go off". Come on guys, let's stop this and start being honest.

Here are a couple of helpful Reference sites worthy to bookmark.

Vote      from abroadMilitary      Service Records of Senate CandidatesWho      Performed Military Service

These patriotic safe at home politicians could get the job done (I'm sure they could) The only change I would make would be to alter their gear. This would even up the playing field for their lack of combat service (excluding McCain, he can have the current issue armor) (I couldn't pass up the Dukakis pic)

Stooges

We can suit them up with these ole' reliables, and  be assigned this top of the line Humvee (vid)

At least they wouldn't be walking, so they wouldn't complain, or piss and moan (ingrates)

Turkey increases military equipment along Iraq border

Picphoto053107turkishmilitary There are new signs that a Turkish strike in Northern Iraq is more likely:

Turkey has sent large contingents of soldiers, tanks and armored personnel carriers to reinforce its border with Iraqamid a heated debate over whether to stage a cross-border offensive tohit terrorist group PKK's bases.

The images of military trucks rumbling along the remote border withIraq's Kurdish zone and tanks being transferred on trains and trucks toreinforce an already formidable force there have dominated televisionscreens and the front pages of several newspapers in the last few weeks.

This underscores the Turkish military's hypersensitivity in recent days.  Earlier this week, Turkey accused the two U.S. F-16 fighter jets of violating its airspace, and demanded that it never happen again.

Although Turkey is preparing, their military is fearful "of a prolonged guerrilla war in the mountains of Kurdistan," which could only complicate the security situation in Iraq even further.

Corruption at the top of Iraq's police force

Picphoto053107iraqipolice Yet another setback for the struggling Iraqi government:

A Sunni police chief praised by US forces for clearing his cityof insurgents has been arrested following an investigation intoalleged murder, corruption and crimes against the Iraqi people, theUS military says.

Col Hamid Ibrahim al-Jazaa, his brother and 14 bodyguards weretaken into custody Tuesday in the city of Hit, 140km west ofBaghdad, according to a statement by the public affairs office ofMultinational Corps-Iraq.

This comes almost exactly one month after Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki reinstated a Saddam-era law that barred internal Iraqi investigations into government corruption.

In other words, in Iraq today it is easier to investigate Sunnis officials than those of Shiite background.  This week, Shiite militiamen wearing police uniforms kidnapped five British soldiers.  There have been concerns about police corruption for the last few years.  But as of this moment, the Shiite police head in Baghdad is not under any investigation.

Editorial: Lieberman, please leave our party

Joe Lieberman paid a surprise visit to Baghdad this week and mimicked John McCain's trip there just one month prior -- patrolling the streets with heavy force and sniper cover.  And like McCain, he claimed that the situation in Iraq is getting better:

Overall, I'd say what I see here today is progress -- significant progress from the last time I was here in December.

But the soldiers there strongly disagree.  While waiting for Lieberman to arrive, a few soldiers spoke with the media:

"We're not making any progress," Hedin said, as he recalled a comradewho was shot by a sniper last week. "It just seems like we drive aroundand wait to get shot at."

But as he waited two chairs down from where Lieberman would sit, Hedin said he'd never voice his true feelings to the senator.

"I think I'd be a private if I did," he joked. "It's just more troops, more targets."

Spc. Kevin Krasco, 20, of Medford, Mass., and Spc. Kevin Adams, 20, ofMoosup, Conn., chimed in with their dismay before turning theconversation to baseball.

"It's like everything else in this war," Adams said, referring to Baghdad. "It hasn't changed."

During the trip, Lieberman even said he would not rule out war with Iran.

Even though the Senate is 51-49, if we explode at people like Joe Biden for supporting the President's Iraq funding bill, then why are there not calls for Democrats to abandon Joe Lieberman?  This Connecticut Senator is pulling the party in the wrong direction on the most important issue since Vietnam.  Yes, we will lose control of the Senate.  But this is a matter of principle.  It is how this Congress will be remembered 50 years from now.  Voters demanded boldness last November.  Instead, we have Senate Majority Leader who awarded pro-war Joe Lieberman the gavel as Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee.  Something is wrong with that.  Even if it means losing the Senate, I would gain a great deal of respect for Harry Reid if he abandoned Mr. Lieberman.

Blue Radar

As I post each morning, here are some of the political stories thatmight not be worthy of their own posts, but are nonetheless newsworthy:

  • Former Karl Rove aide and current U.S. Attorney Tim Griffin has resigned, amid allegations that Rove persuaded the Justice Department to fire the Tennessee attorney and replace him with Griffin.
  • The Red Cross is warning military families about an ID theft scam that specifically targets soldiers.
  • The Justice Department is broadening its investigation into allegations that senior officials hired career workers based on the applicants' politically conservative credentials.
  • Congressional Democrats are proposing legislation that would overturn the recent 5-4 Supreme Court ruling that restricts women from filing lawsuits in sex discrimination cases.
  • Rich Lowry of the conservative National Review says congressional sources tell him of an eventual GOP collapse on Iraq this September.  "Was talking to an influential Republican strategist who thinks if Iraqlooks the way it does now in September, Bush will lose about 25 SenateRepublicans on a bill with some sort of timetable for withdrawal," Lowry wrote.
  • Barack Obama's health care plan mostly centers around eliminating waste and using that money to fund health care for every American.  31% (common knowledge) of all the money our country spends on health care goes to cover administrative costs -- buildings literally stacked full of papers from floor to ceiling.  One way to eliminate that waste is to convert it electronically.
  • President Bush is proposing an additional $30 billion for AIDS programs in Africa.
  • Nearly one-half of all adults in European Union countries are overweight, leading to higher health care costs across the board.  The EU's top public health official also said that 21 million children in the EU are overweight -- and increasing by 400,000 per year.
  • Bob Shrum reveals the startling regret by John Kerry that Edwards was picked as his running-mate: "Kerry said that he wished he'd never picked Edwards, that he should have gone with his gut."  This was part of a very good Newsweek article by Shrum.

If we left anything out, feel free to add any stories in the commentbox.

Blue Nightowl Clips

Here we go with tonight's batch of the top political clips making their rounds on the blogs tonight:

  1. Jack Cafferty on the Cheney letter.
  2. O'Reilly admits contempt for Edwards.  He said Edwards has "sold his soul to far-left interests...He lives like a Sultan...This guy is like a one-man sitcom."  O'Reilly added, "He's a phony." (There is something strange about O'Reilly calling someone else a one-man sitcom.)
  3. Discussion on Scarborough Country about the upcoming September showdown on Iraq.

More clips later today and tomorrow.
