McCain thinks Americans can be re-convinced on Iraq

Picphoto050807mccain During a campaign stop in Iowa, GOP presidential candidate John McCain stopped off for an interview with the Des Moines Register, Iowa's most popular newspaper.  The Arizona Senator hinted that Americans can be convinced the war is winnable:

“I think the American people have to be shown some progress,” theArizona senator added, during a campaign stop in Muscatine. “But look,it’s long, hard and difficult — I understand. Because of themismanagement of the previous four years, it’s going to be verydifficult.”

“Things are safer in Al Anbar province, which used to be the mostdangerous place in all of Iraq,” McCain told more than 100 people at amidday event in Muscatine.

Characterizing Al Anbar as a place that "used to be the most dangerous" might be premature.  Just yesterday, two car bombs went off in that province, which killed 25 people.  And the following excerpt from the New York Times yesterday is not as confident about Anbar's political situation:

Most Iraqis, particularly here in Anbar Province, regard the Americansas occupiers who came uninvited to Iraq and who, in their rush toremove Saddam Hussein , may have damaged the country beyond repair.

McCain can continue to believe what he wants about Anbar.  In the end, the truth is not on his side.
