Blue Radar

As I post each morning, here are some of the political stories thatmight not be worthy of their own posts, but are nonetheless newsworthy:

  • Newsweek Poll: President Bush's job approval rating is 26%.  (Remember though, the floor is about 23%.  There are some people who will support Bush no matter what.)
  • Fundraising in 1st Quarter of '07: DNC - $24.7 million, RNC - $39.8 million.
  • The Administration is reportedly close to shutting down Guantanamo Bay prison.
  • Documents just released show that 30 years ago the CIA secretly tapped and tailed journalists.
  • Congressman Henry Waxman says the Vice President's Office is stone-walling Freedom of Information Act findings of who has visited his residence.  It is required by law that Cheney disclose who visits the Vice Presidential mansion.  Cheney's office is refusing to hand over the records, citing national security reasons.
  • House Republicans want to restrict Speaker Nancy Pelosi's travel.
  • Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill is in Pyongyang after suddenly being invited there by the North Korean government.  These are the first face-to-face bilateral talks with North Korea that have been conducted under President Bush's watch -- an obvious reversal of policy.
  • Congressman Rahm Emanuel issued the ultimate smack-down of Vice President Cheney on Thursday:  "Today, we discovered that everything we learned in U.S. governmentclass was wrong. Evidently, the Vice President does not considerhimself a part of the executive branch, and therefore believes he canobstruct meaningful oversight and avoid being held accountable. If theVice President truly believes he is not a part of the executive branch,he should return the salary the American taxpayers have been paying himsince January 2001, and move out of the home for which they are footingthe bill."
  • Great news for the Democrats' chances of making Senate seat gains in 2008.  Former New Hampshire Governor Jeanne Shaheen is now strongly considering running against Republican incumbent Senator John Sununu.  Also, with Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska facing likely retirement, former Democratic Senator Bob Kerrey is thinking of running for that seat.

If we left anything out, feel free to add any stories in the commentbox.
