Audio of Larry Craig police interrogation
Today, police in Minnesota released this audio of the police interrogation following the arrest of Senator Larry Craig (R-ID), who for engaging in lewd behavior with an undercover cop in a men's bathroom. Craig, a person in , waited more than two months before telling his colleagues and American taxpayers about what happened. The interrogation here immediately became an argument:
Is this hard to believe? As explained yesterday in an exclusive report on CNN, police bust people all the time in public places for what they refer to as "cruising." Corporate executives, lawyers and all sorts of people have been caught:
The hub-bub of the alleged senatorial seeking sex in a bathroom stall has TalkShow Land and MediaLand abuzz with debate and discussion. It's a hypocritical firestorm of fingerpointing, feigned disgust and self-righteousness.
I have no idea about Sen. Craig, his morality or misbehavior. I do know this: Sen. Craig is a working man facing an incredibly embarrassing Pivot Point in his life. Sometimes it takes these Moments of Truth to slap us into what we're doing and not doing. These moments are often the start of a journey that helps us recognize our failures, weaknesses, addictions and self interests. I've met men--good men--who face drug addiction, sex addiction, porn addiction. They love the medicine they take. They hate it too. They struggle against it, fight it and often conquer it ... for a while. Then they fail, they trip and get ensnared again.
I know of a time when a man--married with kids--Mr. Suburbia and even a church leader--began a secret series of restroom rendezvous. Yes, sex with strangers. With men. You'd never know this could be happening. Then he got caught. And arrested. He almost lost everything--his profession, his marriage and his community reputation. That's been more than a decade ago. And now, he's sober and sincerely committed to his life, his wife, his God. He "works" against those inner voices--that addiction--every day. E-v-e-r-y d-a-y. He's a good man. A godly man. And like Sen. Craig, people pointed fingers, accused, verbally accosted and shunned him.
Here's the bottom line. For Sen. Craig--for any man--whatever you face, there is hope. There is redemption. Even in a worldly sense. For the man facing the temptation, living secrets and facing addiction, it takes being True to yourself. Being honest. Admitting weakness. Then it takes Community to help restore and re-build. Restoration requires an inner circle of people who believe in you, love you, seek your best interests and allow you to ride the roller coaster of success and failure. It's One Day At A Time.
And for those of us who point fingers, accuse, attack and distance ourselves from those "disgusting" other people. Shame on us. Sen. McConnell, Sen. McCain, shame on you. Let's look in the mirror. Let's peek in the shadows of our closets. The Great Book says something about big wooden planks blinding our eyes to our own shortcomings and sin, so how can we cast stones at those whose sin has been headlined across America?
If the truth be known, virtually every man--I'd bet one of every 2 men--have secrets that could sell a lot of newspapers and books.
Do not be discouraged. Be true. Fight. Face it. Then forgive yourself. And begin your life over. Every day.
