Iraq Roundup: 175 dead from suicide bombings in the north

Tuesday was the worst day in Iraq in nearly a year.  Nine US soldiers lost their lives.  Also, four suicide bombers killed 175 Iraqi civilians:

Four suicide bombers hit a Yazidi community in northwest Iraq onTuesday, killing at least 175 people and wounding 200 others, the Iraqimilitary said.

The bombs tore through communities nearQahataniya, 75 miles west of Mosul, Iraq's third-largest city, saidAbdul-Rahman al-Shimiri, the top government official in the area, andIraq Army Capt. Mohammed Ahmed.

The attack was the deadliest inIraq since 215 people were killed Nov. 23 when mortar rounds and fivecar bombs killed 215 people in the Shiite neighborhood of Sadr City.

This will damage the credibility of the government in the north, which has recently been lobbying airlines to fly there and claims it is much safer.  I guess you can't always believe everything you hear in commercials.

And that was not even all the violence that happened Tuesday:

BAGHDAD - Fifteen bodies were found around Baghdad, police said.

BAGHDAD - A mortar attack killed two people and wounded four in Baghdad's northern Ur district, police.

KHALIS - The bodies of 15 Sunni Arab men were found shot and dumpednear a petrol station in the town of Khalis, 80 km (50 miles) north ofBaghdad, police said.

TAJI - Ten people were killed and sixwounded when a suicide bomber blew up a fuel tanker on a bridge nearthe town of Taji, 20 km (12 miles) north of Baghdad, police said. Thebridge collapsed.

In a new CBS Poll, the number of Americans who thought the surge was working actually jumped by 10%.
