Aside from Iraq, this Congress has been a success

When you subtract the Democrats' half-hearted effort to end this war, they actually have accomplished a lot in other areas.  In the two years Democrats have to accomplish their six campaign pledges, it took just nine months for the Democrats to accomplish half of them:

The passage of the student loan bill on Friday is the fourth measureheaded to  President Bush’s desk from the Democrats’ “Six in ’06”campaign pledge. If Bush signs the education bill as expected, three ofthe Democrats’ high-profile legislative promises will have become lawless than nine months into their majority.

So in all, here are the six major promises that the Democrats made during last year's campaign season:

  1. Minimum Wage -- Passed and signed
  2. 9/11 Commission Recommendations - Passed and signed
  3. Student Aid -- Passed and about to be signed
  4. Energy Independence
  5. Retirement Security
  6. Affordable Health Care

Aside from the sinking, the Titanic was a success.

And it's not totally the fault of Democrats - it's still a very divided congress. Student Aid is nice. So is Min wage. That's low hanging fruit. But man, Energy independence and Iraq. That's big time. That's change the world kind of stuff. Let's progress on that.

Most definitely! And if we get this other stuff out of the way first, like health care and retirement security, then the Democrats can focus ALL of 2008 on energy independence.

I think the point Todd makes is important. Our tendency to be myopic, to the point of obssessiveness, is not the same as keeping the pressure on to move forward ~ And failure to acknowledge good deeds done does not make the dog more pliant.

At the end of the day, I wouldn't want any of their jobs, even as I demand (to the best of my ability) high performance.
