2008.03.28

This thing could be over very soon

Three things just happened in the last few hours:

  • Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey endorsed Barack Obama.  Bad news for Hillary in a state where she leads and must win.
  • DNC Chairman Howard Dean stepped in and said for the first time that this race must be resolved by July 1st.  It will not go to the convention still deadlocked.  Again, bad news for Hillary.
  • Senator Pat Leahy (D-VT), a very powerful elder in the Democratic Party that chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, is calling on Hillary to drop out.  This comes one day after Chris Dodd, another Senator, called on the former First Lady to get out because she has no chance of winning.  Once again, bad bad news for Hillary.

This has all happened in such a short time frame.  Obama previewed to us a few weeks ago that his campaign would roll out a series of high-profile endorsements before the Pennsylvania primary, giving him added momentum to possibly win there.  So is this it for the endorsements, or will there be more?  Gore?  Edwards?  Carter?

Both time and momentum are not in Hillary's favor.  If Obama wins Pennsylvania, this thing is over.  A few weeks ago, Hillary was so far ahead there.  But with all this added momentum, plus the start of Obama's six-day campaign bus swing there, he may actually have a chance.

A Randy Post About Bloomberg From a NY'ker

It's been a while since I poked my nose in here, but I just wanted to give my thought's about Bloomberg:

Doc
As a Long Island Ny'ker working in NYC, I (as many NY'ker's ) felt Bloomberg was a pompous, arrogant and condescending individual. However, that changed over time and once I (and many others) saw the changes he implemented, our feelings turned. When I look back at why I didn't like him, it was my ignorance which didn't allow meto see the forest through the trees...after all he had banned smoking in the city and that was just wrong because I was a smoker. And let's face it, ifya can't trust The Doctors and Santa, who can ya trust?  In my opinion ya can trust Michael Bloomberg, that's who. While sitting back and letting my thought's flow through my slightly toasted brain cells, it dawned on me "the guy is doing a pretty good job in the city, and he's got a cool few billion, maybe he knows a little more than I do?". Well I have to make a Dr's appt. and start my Christmas list, so until next time kids I bid you farewell.

Well, that's all I have to say about that. Santa_2

Obama speech on economy

Here is the text.  As the most important part of the speech, Obama unveiled a $30 billion stimulus plan.

So who really "helped pass" the Family Medical and Leave Act

This doesn't surprise me AT ALL.

Bloomberg may endorse Obama

First Bill Richardson, now former Republican and current Mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg.  Some have been speculating that the Obama campaign would unveil a wave of high-profile endorsements leading up to the Pennsylvania primary in an effort to push the electability factor and generate added momentum:

Mayor Michael Bloomberg will stand side by side with Democraticpresidential hopeful Sen Barack Obama for the second time in fourmonths Thursday. Bloomberg will introduce the Illinois senator at aspeech on the economy at Cooper Union College.

There may be more to come as well.  Al Gore?  John Edwards?

Also, this might make certain that Bloomberg isn't running for president himself.  Could Obama be considering him as a running mate?

One reason why Gore might step in

If it's for the sake of the party.  Think of it this way -- from the New York Observer:

History may record that there were three distinct windows ofopportunity for Al Gore to play a decisive role in this year’sDemocratic primary contest.

The first was in the days leading up to Super Tuesday,on Feb. 5, when it seemed Barack Obama could do no wrong and a criticalmass of establishment endorsements was piling up in his favor.

The second occurred this month when Florida andMichigan seemed to rule out re-votes, delivering a crushing blow toHillary Clinton’s hopes of catching up in the popular vote.

And the third—and perhaps most irresistible—will arrivein June, after the voting is over, but before the Clinton campaign canlaunch a final, all-out push to make Mr. Obama the unelectablecandidate.

It's been dubbed the Tonya Harding strategy -- where Hillary throws even more than the kitchen sink at Obama and tears him down so much that he becomes unelectable.  I really do think Al Gore, John Edwards and Jimmy Carter would step in.

Hillary can't win popular vote

Mathematically speaking, we are now getting to the point where Hillary Clinton's chances of winning the popular vote nationwide -- the only way she can make a good case to super delegates -- is electorally impossible.  She is behind by more than half a million votes:

13,355,239 - Barack Obama
12,637,963 - Hillary Clinton

Real Clear Politics

In Pennsylvania, Clinton can overcome some of that 717,276 vote deficit, but only by about 200,000 at the most.  That would still leave Obama ahead by some half-a-million votes.  And after Pennsylvania, there aren't any other large states left -- with the exception of North Carolina, but Obama is way ahead in the polls there.

Again, is it possible?  Sure.  Is it electorally plausible?  Not at all.

Hillary might not know it yet, but...

As David Brooks of the New York Times writes this morning, Clinton's hopes are dimming fast:

Hillary Clinton may not realize it yet, but she’s just endured one of the worst weeks of her campaign.

First, Barack Obama weathered the Rev. Jeremiah Wright affairwithout serious damage to his nomination prospects. Obama still holds atiny lead among Democrats nationally in the Gallup tracking poll, justas he did before this whole affair blew up.

Second, Obama’slawyers successfully prevented re-votes in Florida and Michigan. Thatmeans it would be virtually impossible for Clinton to take a lead ineither elected delegates or total primary votes.

Third, asNoam Scheiber of The New Republic has reported, most superdelegateshave accepted Nancy Pelosi’s judgment that the winner of the electeddelegates should get the nomination. Instead of lining up behindClinton, they’re drifting away. Her lead among them has shrunk by about60 in the past month, according to Avi Zenilman of Politico.com.

And on top of that, Hillary is being confronted about her lie regarding the Bosnia visit.

Lobbyists made $2.9 billion in 2007

Maybe why electing a president that refused money from lobbyists is an important thing to think about this election cycle:

Lobbyists reported $2.9 billion in fees last year according to a newstudy by the National Journal, which declared that a record sum.  It'sroughly double what the industry pulled down in 1998, according to themagazine's figures.

Lobbyists likely made "hundreds of millions of dollars more" inincome they aren't legally required to report, the magazine said.

Now that Democrats toppled Tom DeLay's empire, it's time to bring in a president that has always been tough on ethics reform.  We're not going to get anywhere if we elect someone that has been in Washington their entire political career.
